What makes a\nmuseum great is the stuff that\u2019s&nbsp;not&nbsp;on the walls. Someone\nsays no \u2026 There is an editing process. There\u2019s a lot more stuff&nbsp;off&nbsp;the\nwalls than&nbsp;on&nbsp;the walls. The best is a sub-sub-subset of all\nthe possibilities. \u201cIt\u2019s the stuff you leave out that matters,\u201d writes\nJason in Rework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you apply this crucial lesson to building your stock\nportfolio, it means that&nbsp;<strong>you are likely to succeed as an investor not\njust by the stocks you own, but more importantly by the ones you don\u2019t. <\/strong>But\noften, we end up building warehouses of our portfolios, not curated museums. A\nstock is followed by another, then another, two more, three more, and on, and\non, and on. Some people even maintain multiple portfolios, and each looks like\na zoo of mismanaged, rowdy animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People buy stocks for all kind of reasons \u2013 they like them, their\nneighbours like them, their friends are making money on them, someone on\nTwitter is shouting about them, their prices have risen sharply in past few\nmonths, someone recommended them on TV, someone wrote about them on online\nforums, someone is boasting about them on WhatsApp groups, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investing follows life, and this is also what a lot of investors\nend up doing. They create crowded warehouses of portfolios in the initial years\nof their investment careers, realize most of their choices were mistakes, and then\nthey start subtracting vigorously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lest you lose out on the positive compounding timeframe,\u00a0<strong>you will do yourself a world of good by respecting and practising this lesson \u2013 of saying no to most things, of not adding a lot of unwanted stocks to your portfolios<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khandelwal concludes by asking investors to be a curator of\nstocks, not a warehouse manager.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vishal Khandelwal in his recent blog post reminds investors to ask themselves this question.
